WHAT IS RSS?

RSS stands for Rich Site Summary and basically, it’s piece of software which allows your readers to read your content without going to the particular blog. RSS is basically a structure XML document that includes full or summarized text along with other metadata such as published date, author name etc. So, if you are following the 5-6 blog and if you subscribe that RSS feed so you can easily read those articles from RSS feed reader. You don’t have to go their blog and find the latest article they post and then read, which is time-consuming. So, RSS feed is very important for blogs or informative websites where daily posts some interesting stuff.

If you are the owner of any WordPress website you should know about it and interesting part is WordPress automatically publishes RSS feeds of your content & comments. If you know about RSS, that’s great otherwise stick with this article and I’m damn sure you will get complete information about RSS.rss wordpress

ADVANTAGES OF RSS FEEDS

There are so many advantages like your subscribers can read your content easily without visiting your website. There are many feed readers on the market right now but the best software is Feedly which is also available on Android or iOS devices. So, grab the links of your favorite blogs and add to Feedly. You don’t have to remember URL of the blogs. You will get all information at one place.

Feedly is available on mobile devices, you can read feeds from anywhere and even offline. Feedly also allows you to share the articles on social media so if your readers like the article then they can share it on social media. So, you will get more traffic towards your blog. You can easily find the latest article of your favorite blog easily and once you read that article you can Mark as Reading. The biggest advantage is, you save time by visiting every blog you like and read as many articles you want.

HOW TO USE RSS FEEDS?

You can use RSS reader, Feedly or Feed Burner. From these 3 I really like Feedly which is a free RSS reader. Feedly is available as a browser add-on as well as Android, iOS app and Kindle devices. The best part is it is available across every device so you can sync your subscription across any devices you have and even resume reading wherever you left it. You can add as many blogs in one account. The procedure is so simple you have to enter the only URL and you are ready to go!rss wordpress

You can search your favorite topic and you can subscribe the updates from that topic. You can categorize some of your favorite blogs like tech blog, fashion blog, review blog, travel blog etc. Feedly has some great features like highlight the line, social media share, print, email share and much more.

You can download Feedly apps from here;

You should know before hosting website on your device;

If you want to create a website for your own then you should locally host it on your system. In this case, your system is work as a server and your website will host on it. All the data of your website will save on it. So, If you shutdown the server then you can access your website. You don’t even access it on other devices.

No one can open your website. If you want to make a website/blog which lives on search engines, you have to host it on other servers like GoDaddy, HostGator, Bluehost etc. For that, you have to pay some charges called hosting charges. So, these tutorial is for them who want to make a website for own.

To host your website on your system you should have 4 important things;

Suitable System [PC/Mac/Notebook]

Xampp [Open Source Web Server]

Latest version of WordPress

Text Editor

Suitable System:

Xampp is available for different platforms like Windows, MacOS & Linux. You can select a proper system, which you can play with it like if you are comfortable with PC [I mean Windows!] then choose it but in this tutorial, I’m using Mac.

Xampp:

Xampp is the open source cross-platform web server solution stack developed by Apache Friends. We will host a website using Xampp. You can download the form here.

The latest version of WordPress:

WordPress is the best CMS to create responsive websites and we will use WordPress to create our website. It’s open-source software. Click here to download.

Text Editor:

We will use a text editor to change the coding of PHP files. You can use whatever you like but I’m using Sublime Text or you can use default text editor. It’s open source software.

1st of all you have to download Xampp for the respective operating system. I’m using Mac. Click here to download. Click on download other versions & select latest PHP version. It takes time.

Now, it’s time to download the latest version of WordPress. Click here to download.

Open Xampp. It will ask your permission. install wordpress xamppNow, go to Manage Servers. 3 servers are available there & all are stopped. install wordpress xamppNow, click on MySQL Database & Apache Web Server make it start. No need to start ProFTPD server. install wordpress xamppIt takes the time to start both servers. Now, minimize this window and open a web browser.

Now, enter localhost and hit enter. It will redirect you to localhost/dashboard. install wordpress xamppOnce you get this page it means Xampp is properly installed on your system.

Now, it’s time to setup database. For that, you have to click on phpMyAdmin.

install wordpress xamppClick on the database. Enter the name of the database and create. Your database is created & now you are ready to install WordPress.

install wordpress xampp

Extract WordPress.zip file which you download from WordPress website. Open the extracted folder.

install wordpress xamppSearch for wp-config-sample.php and now we edit this file in text editor.

install wordpress xamppOnce you open it, you will see coding there and now search for

define (‘DB_NAME’ , ‘database_name_here’);

define (‘DB_USER’ , ‘username_here’);

define (‘DB_PASSWORD’ , ‘password_here’);

And change it with;

install wordpress xampp

define (‘DB_NAME’ , ‘wordpress’); [in my case, wordpress is the databsse]

define (‘DB_USER’ , ‘root’);

define (‘DB_PASSWORD’ , ‘’); [leave it blank]

Once you were done, save as this file & rename it with wp-config.php Please do not save it, save as it.

install wordpress xampp

It means there are 2 files;

wp-config-sample.php

wp-config.php

install wordpress xamppNow, close this window and move this wordpress folder to

Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/wordpress

To check, go to your web browser and enter

Now, your Partial Backup is completed. But in my suggestion, you should go for Full Backup because, If you forget to download MySQL Database then you can’t restore your website. So, Full Backup is perfect for beginners and it will take care of all your important data.

So, don’t click on Backup Now otherwise, it will create a backup of your website and store on the server.

Now, go to Settings. Select File Backup Intervals & Database Backup Intervals. To set a specific time backup you have to purchase Premium Plan. Check the boxes which you want to include in a backup like Plugins, themes, database etc. If you like to receive emails when the backup has been completed then check Email box. Now, select the remote storage. There are lots of different options but I’m gonna choose Google Drive. Make sure you have to configure your Google Drive account otherwise you can’t access this account for storing your backups.

Now, search for Google Developer Console. (Or click here!) Log in with your google account. Select 1st option Use Google APIs. Enter the name of the project. If you want email updates then select Yes otherwise, accept terms and conditions and Create. A new page will open and in Google Apps APIs select Drive API.  Enable API then go to Credentials on the left sidebar. Select OAuth Consent Screen. Enter your email and product name (you can use UpdraftPlus in Product Name) and Save.

Now, you can see Add Credentials blue button click on the drop down part of that button. Select OAuth 2.0 Client ID. Select Web Applications. Enter your website URL in Authorized JavaScript Origins. Now, go to your UpdraftPlus setting tab on your website and copy Authorized Redirect URL and paste in the same box on Google developer Console page and Create.

Now, you will get Client ID and Client Secret. Copy it and paste it into the UpdraftPlus settings and Save Changes.

Once again, go to UpdraftPlus setting and click on the link which is in Authenticate with Google tab. Login to your Google account and Allows it. Once all done you will get a message like Google Drive Authentication is successful.

Now, you are ready to click on Backup Now. It will take a time to take a backup and it will automatically store on remote location.
